DESCRIPTION
We were at the botanical gardens on a beautiful day — the kind of day I could have wandered through for hours with the camera glued to my face, completely lost in it. My daughter was not having the same experience.
She followed behind me asking "are we done yet??" every few minutes until she was sent to lean against a brick wall, restless, to wait for the moment we'd finally leave. I was surrounded by all this beauty, soaking it in, and right next to me was someone counting the minutes.
As I was there taking pictures of the gorgeous botanical gardens, I was drawn to her — her face, her expression, the lighting and play of shadows — and found myself photographing her instead.
That contrast is exactly what I wanted to capture — a kid who'd had enough, and a mom who wasn't ready to go; not a posed, happy family photo moment; as well as the beautiful play of light and shadow.
I think every parent knows this exact feeling, from one side or the other. The dragging-your-feet boredom of being somewhere your parents love and you don't.
Or the ache of wanting your child to see what you see, and realizing, not yet — maybe not today. And the sigh of realizing that your child is missing out on all the beauty around them because they refuse to really see it.
PERFECT FOR
Parents who know this exact feeling • Real, honest family moments over posed perfection • Portrait and figurative art lovers • Nursery, playroom, or family room decor
